Oliners Embark on a “Sustainable Semester” at Woodland Harvest Mountain Farm.
A group of Oliners have embarked on what they’ve termed a “sustainable semester” on a NC permaculture farmstead. At the Woodland Harvest Mountain Farm, they’re getting their education through self-directed engineering projects designed to enhance the self-sustainability of the small farm. Some students are planning to take Olin classes online at the same time—via solar-powered laptops.
The group recently checked in as September rolled on, sharing that they've broken ground on their living spaces, design for the Octagon Cabin and Crones Cottage is now complete and trees blocking large amounts of sunlight have been cut down to utilize passive solar heating.
This was the first time many of the group had planned for and built such a large structure, but they learned and even discovered "new techniques of making more accurate measurements and creating clear labels around the worksite for the spread of correct information."
